S4: 4v4 Street Basketball Blacktown [Thu] Rules

THE OBJECT OF THE GAME is to outscore your opponent by shooting the ball into your basket and preventing them from scoring in theirs. The ball can only be advanced up the court by dribbling or passing to teammates.

DURATION OF THE GAME: All matches will consist of two 15-minute halves, with a 3-minute break in between. The clock will run continuously, with stoppages made only under exceptional circumstances at the sole discretion of the UR Staff.

THE COURT: The game will be played on a half-court, with one basket in play. Court size may vary depending on the venue, but the standard half-court dimensions will be used.

THE TEAM: The number of players required on the court is four (4).

  • Only four (4) players are allowed on the court at any one time.
  • There must be a minimum of one (1) male and one (1) female on the court at all times.
  • Teams must have at least three (3) players, including one male or one female, to start the game.
  • Please refer to our Default, Forfeit, and Substitute Policy.

SUBSTITUTIONS can be made at any stoppage of play. Players entering the court must wait until the player they are substituting for has fully exited the court.

STARTING PLAY: The game begins with a jump ball at center court. In the 1st half, two females will contest the jump ball, and in the 2nd half, two males will contest it.

HOW TO SCORE: Each 2-point basket will be worth 1 point, and each 3-point basket will be worth 2 points. A successful foul shot attempt will be worth 1 point.

FOULS: Fouls are assessed for rough play to ensure fair competition. A player who is fouled will be awarded the ball out of bounds unless the foul occurred during a shooting attempt, in which case the player is awarded 1 free throw for a 2-point shot attempt or 2 free throws for a 3-point shot attempt. No personal fouls will be recorded, but team fouls may be enforced.

  • Blocking: Illegal personal contact by the defender impeding the opponent's progress.
  • Charging: Offensive player makes contact with a stationary defender.
  • Elbowing: Swinging elbows excessively.
  • Flagrant Foul: Violent actions such as fighting, striking, kicking, or kneeing.
  • Hand Check: Repeated contact by the defender using hands.
  • Holding: Illegal contact that interferes with an opponent's movement.
  • Blocking Females: Male players may block a female’s shot only if they adhere to the following: (1) feet must remain on the ground, (2) hands and arms must be straight up, and (3) no leaning in. If a male player blocks in violation of these rules, the basket will count, and an additional free throw will be awarded.

VIOLATIONS: Common basketball violations result in a turnover, giving possession to the opposing team.

  • Back-court Violation: Offensive players cannot bring the ball back across the half-court line once crossed.
  • Closely Guarded: Offensive player must pass or advance within 5 seconds when closely guarded.
  • Double Dribble: Dribbling after picking up the ball or touching it with both hands.
  • Goal-tending: Touching a shot on its downward flight above the rim.
  • Lane Violation: Entering the lane too soon during a free throw.
  • Ten Seconds in the Back-court: A team has 10 seconds to advance the ball past the half-court line.
  • Three Seconds in the Lane: Offensive players cannot remain in the free-throw lane for more than 3 seconds while in possession of the ball.
  • Traveling: Moving feet without properly dribbling the ball.

WINNING TEAM: The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner. If both teams have the same score, the game is a draw. The winning team receives 3 points, while a draw gives each team 1 point. Fun Points will affect standings; teams tied on competition points will be ranked based on Fun Points.

FAIRPLAY SYSTEM: Each league night will have an Event Host onsite. These hosts are not official referees; they promote a fair-play and fun-first policy, meaning players should make their own calls. The Event Host will make calls only when necessary, manage time, and guide the game according to the rules. The Urban Rec Event Host has the final say on any unresolved issues.

SPORTSMANSHIP: All participants must adhere to the Urban Rec Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Policy. Unsportsmanlike behavior will lead to removal from the game. Continued poor conduct after returning to the game may result in being asked to leave.
